Mother's Day Card

Mother's day is just around the corner on May 12th! Hopefully this isn't the first you are hearing of this and you're already thinking about what to get your beloved mom. Remember when you were 7 and you made her a card? Who says that needs to stop just because you're 25? It doesn't! So let's make your mom a stellar card!

Set Up:

• White Craft Paint
• Assorted Buttons
• Light Pink, Pink, Light Purple, Purple felt
• Pink Cardstock Paper
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Paintbrush 

•   Time: Two Weddings in Four Weddings

Step One: Fold the Card

This one should be self explanatory. Take the paper and meet one end to the other end. Tip: Use the bottom of the paint bottle to pressure the fold straight.

Step Two: Paint on your Letters

What's better to say to your mom on Mother's Day then "Happy Mother's Day". Use the pencil to lightly sketch on the letters before you paint them. Tip: Start with the center letters at the middle of the card, then the letters on the outside, in the middle of each side start with that center letter. Then fill in the additional letters. This will create even lettering.

Step Three: Add Painted Embellishments

This step is optional, however I like to add a little extra and painting can be addicting! So I chose to add two flourishes on either side of Day (Tip: Like elongated letter S's) and a dotted line between Happy Mother's and Day (Tip: Start with the center and work your way outward).

Step Four: Add Felt Bow Embellishments

For this card I chose to do a simpler felt bow embellishment. Now I present MINI-STEPS FOR MINI FELT BOWS!

Step One: Cut Felt

Cut your felt pieces into 2in. by 1 1/2in. squares. 

Cut the Light Purple, Light Pink, and Pink pieces into a number 8 by folding the piece in half and cutting a circular side making sure the center is still connected. Cut the Dark Purple, Pink, and Light Pink into long and thing rectangles. Tip: This is a good craft to use scraps since you need such a little bit of felt.

Step Two: Add the Center of the Bow

Glue the center of the 8 shaped piece to the center of the thin rectangle.

Fold one side and glue to the back of the 8, then put a small amount of glue on the back and connect the other side of the rectangle. Make sure to pull tightly so it will look more bow like.

Step Three: Glue the Button On

Add the button to the Bow!! And you're done!

Step Five: Add the Bow Embellishments

Place a dot of hot glue on the card and then glue the felt bow to the card. 

Step Six: Create Interior

This step is OPTIONAL. Take embellishment scissors and cut a rectangle out of a lighter pink card stock for the interior of the card. Then glue to the inside.

Paint on lettering for the interior using the same technique as Step Two. Leave space between I and You for your felt heart. 

Cut a small heart out of the pink felt and glue on the interior.

You're Done!!

A Flower A Day Keeps the Wilting Away, Part Six: Sunflower

This is it! We've made it to the end! Sorry for the massive delay!! Let's make some friggin' sunflowers ya'll! 

Set Up:

• Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
• Scissors
• Felt Sheets (1 yellow, 1 goldenrod, 1 green)
• Construction Paper (1 Yellow, 1 brown)
• Brown colored buttons and beads
• Sticks
• Flower Tape
• Time: One Episode of Smash

Step One: Make some circles!

Cut 2 squares of felt and 2 squares of construction paper in every color.

Cut the felt squares into large circles by cutting the square in half. Cut the construction paper squares into smaller circles that will fit as the center of the sunflower. Your light yellow circle should be slightly larger than your brown circle.

Cut fringe around the yellow paper circle.

Step Two: Make some Petals!

Take your yellow and goldenrod circles of felt and fold them to create petal shapes. Make sure there is enough space in the middle so that the paper circle will go on. Make a criss cross slit on the goldenrod petal piece. If you haven't figured out criss cross by now-Fold, small center slit, FOLD, small center slit.

Take another piece of your yellow felt and cut into a long rectangle that's about 1.5" thick, the same as your petals on the other pieces. Accordion fold the rectangle to create smaller rectangles that are about 1.5 cms thick. Cut these small rectangles into petals.

Step Three: Attach your petals!

Slip your goldenrod petal piece onto the stick. Put some glue in the center where the stick is and pinch it upward. Glue your yellow petal piece to the top of the goldenrod petal piece.

Glue the yellow circle to the top center of the yellow felt. Then start placing your individual petals to that circular piece. There's no such thing as too many petals on a sunflower so make sure to space evenly and add layers. Tip: Placing petals like the numbers on a clock, start with the quarter hours (12, 3, 6, 9) and then place them in between, and so on and so forth!

Step Four: Add the center!

Glue the brown piece to the center of the sunflower to mask your petals. Then start to glue your buttons, beads, and any other embellishments to the center. I added dots of brown puff paint to give more texture.

Step Five: Add the greenery!

Cut a large circle out of the green felt. Fray the ends just slightly, 2 millimeters, and a criss cross cut in the center. 

For the leaves cut two 3"x1" strips. Fold the strips in half and cut a hill shape to create the leaf. 

Take the center of the bottom greenery and pull the stick through the center. Glue half of the circle to the bottom petal layer, then glue the other half after it dries.

Take your leaves and put a small strip of glue on the bottom. Pinch the strip and the felt to the stick, repeat this for the other leaf. 

Step Five: Wrap it up!

Take your floral tape and cut a strip of about 3 inches. Use a small drip of glue on the base of the green, attach one end of the floral tape to that drip. Start wrapping the floral tape tightly around the base and down towards the stick. Tip: Floral tape is waxy, embrace it and use your fingers to pressure the tape onto the stick. You can always wash your hands after! 

Repeat this step for the base of the leaves.

Step Six: You're Done!

You're finished now! you have a beautiful Sunflower! Repeat all these steps and make another one and another one and another one!! Spray them with something that smells good so you can stop and take a whiff! Hopefully by now you have an entire bouquet that is absolutely amazing! A Flower A Day Keeps the Wilting Away, Part Five: Purple Branches

SO, It's Day Five! That means just two more tutorials left! Now these are a little weird. Weird in a cool way. I don't know exactly what to call these flowers, but I've totally seen something similar that exist in nature. It sort've reminds me of a hyacinth meets lavender and purple is one of my favorite colors so this thing adds a neat little flair to your bouquet. 

Set Up:

• Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
• Scissors
• Felt Sheets (2 Shades of Purple, 1 Pink)
• Sticks with branches
• Time: The birthing part of A Baby Story

Step One: Cut some squares!

These squares are going to be your best friend. Cut slightly smaller than 1"x1" squares of each color. Mostly light purple, then dark purple, and just a few pink.

Step Two: Create the shape!

Take the squares and cut them into diamond like shapes. Add a criss cross into the center. Yeah, seriously, for the fifth time you're doing this again. But just in case you forgot, fold the shape in half cut a small slit, then fold in half again and cut another slit so you have an X slit in the center. It will have a hole like this:

Step Three: Add your petal pieces!

Slide your pieces onto the branches. Then put two small dots of glue onto the felt, pinch the felt in a diamond shape to the stick. Remember the paper fortuneteller game you used to make as a kid? That's the type of pinch you want.

Repeat this step so many times that you've burnt al the tips of your hands. Tip: I challenge you to never burn your hands using a hot glue gun. Seriously. You can't, it's impossible. 

Step Four: You're Done!

You're finished! Now you have a beautiful purple branch! Repeat all these steps and make another one and another one and another one!! They are kinda neat and cool on their own and you can always change up the color scheme. Spray them with something that smells good so you can stop and take a whiff!
